Getting to Isla Piedra is easy. You fly into Mazatlan Intl Airport. It's small enough that immigration, customs and baggage claim can be cleared in under 45 minutes. The drive to Isla Piedra is on traffic-free country roads, and takes only 10 minutes. On a good day, you can be at the pool or beach in less than an hour after the wheels touch ground. Don't confuse Isla Piedra with Mazatlan. Both are in Mexico, both are reached by flying into Mazatlan's Airport, but they are a world apart. To get to Mazatlan require an additional 20 minute ride by highway. Isla Piedra and its 12 miles of endless surf are separated from Mazatlan by the mouth of the harbor. The entrance to the resort is gated and staffed by security. We make the trip to Mazatlan at least once each stay. The resort runs a regular shuttle schedule (inexpense) to and from the Gold Zone (busy tourist district) severl times daily. The ride is about 20 minutes depending on traffic. My kids make me endure the congestion, chaos and noise of the main tourist beach. They get their hair braided, jet ski or parasail, and buy ugly T-shirts at Senor Frogs. What I enjoy is leaving at night to go home to peace, tranquility and safety. I do enjoy the Mazatlan Historic District. The main Cathedral sits on a beautiful square, lined with shops, restaurants, and cantinas with live music. My favorite place, Pedro & Lola's, has live Jazz most weeks. On weekends, artisans set up booths in the center of the square. What makes this place special is that most of the people are locals, enjoying the best of their country's old world charm. The few tourists here, are quieter types, escaping the noise. If you like seafood (catching it, or eating it) Mazatlan is your place. In season, rows of shrimp boats cruise the coast, and the deep sea charters haul in an incredible number of trophy marlin and swordfish. Mazatlan area has many other activities for the adventurous: Climb Lighthouse, Sunday Bullfights and whale watching.

Pascoso is an ideal stay for nature's lovers. Pascoso's finest asset, and the most important reason to travel there, is the nature in which it is literally immersed. In many ways, the surrounding mountains and age-old trees are wild and untouched, the dense thickets grow untamed and the canyons, crossed by mule tracks, curl open to reveal sweet pastures where one can lie down in the soft, mountain sun. However, Pascoso is not far from the "cities of arts" of Tuscany (Lucca,Pisa,Florence,Siena, etc., and beaches (Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio,which are among the most famous Italian beaches) are no more than 30 miles far. Pascoso is a hiker's paradise, from short strolls in the hillsides with your children or dog, stopping to taste cool water at a natural spring, to longer hikes, where you can walk all day long without meeting a soul and sleep overnight in one of the many shelters that the valley. Many of the mule paths are suitable for mountain bikes and horses, which you can rent in Pascoso. For some hikes you might want to drive a few short minutes to your point of departure, whereas for others, you can leave directly on foot from your front door. And clearly, for visitors with off-road vehicles, the opportunities are endless. A section of the Turrite Stream is reserved for fishing. Trout abound, although, given the low levels of the water, they generally do not grow to be very large. Further downstream, the Turrite flows into a large, artificial basin where the fish are less numerous, but much bigger. As you may have already imagined, the only sounds you'll hear in Pascoso are dogs barking and townsfolk chatting. Quiet reigns through the mountainside. The area is ideal for hiking, horseback riding (there are two barns where you can rent horses), and biking. In mid-August, Pascoso organizes a parade dedicated to the Madonna, in which a statue of the Holy Mother is carried high on a canopy throughout the town.
